Ben's paper, entitled Antimicrobial effects of commercial silver nanoparticles are attenuated in natural streamwater and sediment is now available online. This paper shows that the impacts of silver nanoparticles, although very toxic to bacteria in lab culture, are strongly attenuated in natural waters and sediments.

Congratulations to Brooke & Chad on the birth of baby Tegan. This brings the lab progeny list to a statistically improbably 8 daughters born to lab members in a row (no sons so far).

Today Kris Voss was awarded a 3 year dissertation fellowship from the U.S. EPA to support his dissertation research examining the effects of surface coal mining on the structure and function of Appalachian stream biological communities. He found out 1 hour before his qualifying exam.  Four hours late, Kris advanced to candidacy. Go Kris!

Brian's paper describes changes in water and element cycling in the Walker Branch watershed over the last twenty years. His work documents dramatic oscillations in climate are associated with substantial changes in watershed biogeochemistry. The paper is available as a preprint

Brian Lutz will be joining the faculty of the Biology Department at Kent State in January 2013 

Kayleigh was awarded ~$12K to support her last summer of field research on how urban infrastructure configuration affects stream thermal regimes and the timing, magnitude and duration of storm derived heat surges. Great work Kayleigh!

Alison successfully defends her Ph.D.  As the final requirement of her graduate career, Alison also performed her disseration as a ballad while accompanying herself on acoustic guitar. You can check out the truly amazingly talented Dr. Appling on this youtube video.  Congrats Alison!!
